Military time conversion rules

Military time uses a four-digit 24-hour clock. The first two digits are hours from 00 through 23 and the last two are minutes from 00 through 59.

  • From 1:00 PM through 11:59 PM, add 12 to the standard-clock hour.
  • For 12:xx AM, use hour 00.
  • For 12:xx PM, keep hour 12.
  • For elapsed time crossing midnight, add 1,440 minutes to the end time before subtracting.

Important: Military time is a clock notation, not a time zone. A value such as 1730 does not identify UTC, local time or daylight-saving rules. This calculator does not model time zones or payroll policies.

Frequently asked questions

Is midnight 0000 or 2400?

Use 0000 for the start of a day. Some schedules use 2400 for the end of a day, but this calculator uses 0000 to avoid date ambiguity.

Does military time use a colon?

Compact military notation is commonly written as 1730. The equivalent 24-hour clock display is 17:30.

How are overnight hours calculated?

In automatic mode, an end time earlier than the start is treated as the next day. Equal times represent zero elapsed time unless “next day” is selected.

Can I calculate paid work hours?

The interval mode can subtract one break, but it does not apply overtime, rounding or labor rules. Use the Time Card Calculator for those calculations.
