Drive time calculator
Estimate road-trip duration and arrival time from distance and average speed, then add traffic, planned breaks and fixed delays.
Enable JavaScript to use the calculator. The formulas and checked examples remain available below.
Drive time formula
Traffic time = moving time × allowance percentage
Total trip time = moving time + traffic time + fixed delay + planned break time
A round trip doubles the entered one-way distance. The calculator schedules a break after each complete break interval but never adds a break at the moment of arrival. Arrival is computed from elapsed time and the two manually entered UTC offsets.
Checked drive-time examples
| Inputs | Result before added stops |
|---|---|
| 120 miles at 60 mph | 2 hours |
| 300 miles at 50 mph | 6 hours |
| 450 km at 90 km/h | 5 hours |
| 100 miles round trip at 50 mph | 4 hours for 200 miles |
| 240 miles at 60 mph + 25% traffic | 5 hours before fixed delays or breaks |
| 8 driving hours, break every 2 hours | 3 breaks before arrival |
| Depart 8:00 AM UTC−5; 3-hour trip; finish at UTC−6 | 10:00 AM destination time |
How to get a useful estimate
- Use the driving distance from your route, not straight-line distance.
- Enter a realistic moving average that reflects the whole route.
- Add a percentage for traffic and route uncertainty.
- Schedule rest breaks and add known fixed delays.
- Enter manual UTC offsets only when you need a destination-local arrival time.
Frequently asked questions
Why can the estimate differ from GPS navigation?
Navigation services use a specific route and may incorporate current traffic. This calculator uses the distance, average speed and allowances you enter, so it is best for transparent scenario planning.
Should I enter the speed limit?
No. Enter the expected average while moving. Stops, slower roads, congestion and acceleration usually make the route average lower than the highest posted limit.
How are breaks counted?
A break is added after each completed driving interval, except at arrival. For eight hours of adjusted driving with a break every two hours, the calculator adds breaks after hours two, four and six.
Does traffic affect the break schedule?
Yes. The traffic allowance extends adjusted moving time, and the rest schedule is based on that adjusted time.
Does it handle time zones and daylight saving time?
It converts between numeric UTC offsets. It does not identify place-based time zones or daylight-saving rules automatically. Confirm the applicable offset for the travel date.
Can two drivers make the trip faster?
The number of drivers only divides estimated wheel time. It does not shorten the route, traffic allowance, breaks or arrival estimate.
