Pace, time, distance, and speed formulas

For distance d and elapsed time t, pace is p = t ÷ d. Rearranging gives t = pd and d = t ÷ p. Speed is the reciprocal relationship expressed as distance per hour. The calculator converts distance to kilometers and time to seconds before solving.

  5. Use moving time rather than total event time if you want a moving pace.

Units and limitations

  • 1 mile = 1.609344 km; 1 kilometer = 1,000 meters; 1 yard = 0.9144 meters.
  • Speed is shown in km/h, mph, and m/s. Pace is shown in minutes per kilometer and minutes per mile.
  • Distance must be finite and greater than zero; time and pace must also be positive when used as known inputs.
  • Seconds must be below 60. In HH:MM:SS, minutes must also be below 60.
  • Reference times assume constant pace and do not adjust for terrain, fatigue, weather, stops, elevation, or race strategy.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between pace and speed?

Pace is time required per unit distance, while speed is distance covered per unit time. Faster movement means a lower pace value but a higher speed value.

Is pace the same as velocity?

No. Pace and speed use magnitude only. Velocity is a vector and also includes direction or displacement.

Should I include stopped time?

Use total elapsed time for event pace. Use moving time when you want pace only while in motion.

Can I use this for cycling or swimming?

Yes for distance-time calculations, but the displayed reference races and min/km or min/mile pace formats are oriented toward running and walking.
