Restaurant and hospitality tool
Tip pool calculator

Distribute a tip pool by hours worked, points or equal shares, with penny-balanced results.

Formatting only; no exchange-rate conversion.
Enter the amount actually available for this distribution.
Each share follows the participant’s hours divided by total hours.

Participants

Enable only the people included in this pool. Names are optional; allocation units must be positive for hours or points.

How to use the tip pool calculator

  1. Enter the amount available for distribution.
  2. Choose hours worked, points/weights or equal shares.
  3. Enable each participant and enter the required hours or points.
  4. Select Calculate tip shares. The displayed shares are balanced to the smallest currency unit so they add back to the pool.

Tip pooling formulas

For an hours-based pool, each participant receives:

Participant share = tip pool × participant hours ÷ total participant hours

The points method replaces hours with points or weights. Equal sharing assigns one unit to every enabled participant:

Equal share = tip pool ÷ number of participants

Because currency is paid in discrete minor units, the calculator floors each raw share to cents and assigns any remaining cents to the largest fractional remainders. This prevents the displayed participant amounts from adding to one cent more or less than the pool.

Checked examples

Example 1: distribute by hours worked

A $500 pool is shared among Ava (8 hours), Ben (6), Cara (4) and Diego (2). Total hours are 20, so one pool hour is worth $25. The shares are $200, $150, $100 and $50, adding exactly to $500.

Example 2: distribute by points

A $600 pool is divided among three roles assigned 1, 2 and 3 points. Six points are active, so each point is worth $100. The shares are $100, $200 and $300.

Example 3: equal shares with a remainder

A $100 pool shared equally by three people produces two shares of $33.33 and one share of $33.34. The extra cent is assigned deterministically so the displayed total remains $100.
