Stud calculator formula
For one straight wall, convert wall length and spacing to the same unit. The layout count is:
Layout studs = ceil(wall length ÷ spacing) + 1
The extra 1 includes the far end stud. When the wall length is not an exact multiple of the spacing, the last bay is shorter. Then:
Base studs = layout studs + additional studs
Order quantity = ceil(base studs × (1 + allowance ÷ 100))

How to use the estimate
- Measure a single straight wall run and choose the matching unit system.
- Enter the on-center spacing from the project design rather than treating the default as a recommendation.
- Add the full-height studs required by the actual corner, intersection, opening and reinforcement details.
- Adjust the allowance, bundle quantity and price. The result rounds orders and packs upward.
- Repeat for each separate wall, then add the order quantities.
Important limitations
- The result counts full-height vertical studs; it excludes plates, headers, sills, cripples, blocking, bracing, sheathing and fasteners.
- The additional-stud field is deliberately editable because opening and corner assemblies vary by design, materials and jurisdiction.
- Bundle count is purchasing math only. Suppliers may sell different pack quantities or individual pieces.
- Total linear length assumes every ordered stud has the entered full length and does not optimize offcuts.
- Price excludes tax, delivery, treatment, waste disposal and labor.
- Structural and code decisions require project documents and qualified local review.

Why does the formula add one stud?
The spacing divisions describe bays. Adding one includes the stud at the far end of the wall.
Can I calculate an entire room at once?
Calculate each straight wall separately and add the results. Treating a room perimeter as one run would miss endpoint studs at wall breaks.
Does it subtract doors and windows?
No. Openings change the framing arrangement rather than simply removing wall length. Enter the project-specific net change as additional full-height studs, and estimate headers, sills and cripples separately.
Can it calculate metal studs?
The spacing count can describe a straight metal-stud wall, but member selection, tracks, openings, bracing and connection details are outside this calculator.
Is the default spacing a code requirement?
No. It is an editable example only. Use the spacing in the project documents or applicable local requirements.
How is the bundle count calculated?
The order quantity is divided by the entered pack quantity and rounded upward. Cost still uses the per-stud price and ordered stud count.
