Asphalt calculator formulas

Use consistent units and the compacted density supplied for the selected asphalt mix.

Volume = net area × compacted thickness
Base weight = volume × compacted density
Order weight = base weight × (1 + allowance ÷ 100)

For US customary inputs, thickness is divided by 12 to convert inches to feet and pounds are divided by 2,000 for short tons. For metric inputs, centimeters are divided by 100 and kilograms are divided by 1,000 for tonnes.

How to estimate an asphalt order

  1. Choose the unit system and enter either length and width or a measured area.
  2. Add or subtract only non-overlapping areas so the net paving footprint remains positive.
  3. Enter the compacted layer thickness from the project design.
  4. Replace the example density with the value supplied for the actual mix.
  5. Set a project allowance, payload and price. The calculator rounds truckloads upward but leaves tonnage unrounded for supplier review.

Important limitations

  • This tool estimates material quantity; it does not design pavement thickness, base, drainage, slope or compaction requirements.
  • The default density is an editable example and is not valid for every hot-mix, warm-mix, cold-patch, recycled or milled asphalt product.
  • Calculated volume is compacted volume. Loose delivered volume and field yield can differ.
  • Truckloads are rounded upward from the payload entered; dispatch practices and legal payload limits may differ.
  • Material cost excludes mobilization, milling, tack coat, base repair, labor, equipment, testing, tax and disposal.
  • Confirm dimensions, mix, density, minimum order and final tonnage with the supplier or contractor.

What density should I use?

Use the compacted density from the producer or mix design. The prefilled value is an estimating example, not a universal specification.

Does the result use short tons or metric tonnes?

The US mode reports 2,000-pound short tons. Metric mode reports 1,000-kilogram tonnes.

Can it estimate asphalt cost?

Yes. Enter the price per short ton or tonne. The result covers material weight only and excludes the other project costs listed above.

Does it calculate loose asphalt volume?

No. The volume is based on the entered compacted thickness. Loose delivery volume and compaction yield require supplier data.

Can I use it for several paving sections?

You may combine non-overlapping areas with the additional-area field when their thickness and density are the same. Calculate different layers or mixes separately.
