Stock Calculator
Calculate average stock cost, cost basis, profit or loss, break-even price, total return and annualized return across as many as five purchases.
How the stock calculations work
- Adjusted cost basis = the sum of shares × purchase price, plus buy fees.
- Average cost per share = adjusted cost basis ÷ total shares.
- Total profit or loss = net sale value + cash dividends − adjusted cost basis.
- Total return = total profit or loss ÷ adjusted cost basis.
- Annualized return compounds the overall result across the holding period. It is not calculated when the ending value is zero.
- Break-even price includes both fees and cash dividends. Taxes and inflation are not included.
Example
For 100 shares bought at $10, with $5 buy fees, $5 estimated sell fees, $50 cash dividends and a $12 sale price, the adjusted basis is $1,005 and total profit is $240. The total return is about 23.88%, and the break-even price is $9.60 per share.
Important limits
This calculator is an educational estimate, not investment, tax or accounting advice. Corporate actions, taxes, wash-sale rules, foreign exchange, return of capital and reinvested dividends can change the official tax basis. Use your broker’s records for tax reporting.
