Discount Calculator: Percent Off, Coupons, Tax and Total

Discount calculator

Calculate stacked discounts and an order total, recover an original price, or find the percent off between two prices.

Discount formulas

For one discount, sale price = original price × (1 − discount rate). With successive discounts, multiply the remaining-price factors: sale price = original × (1 − d₁) × (1 − d₂) × (1 − d₃).

The combined percent off is 1 − [(1 − d₁) × (1 − d₂) × (1 − d₃)]. Two successive discounts of 20% and 10% equal a 28% combined discount, not 30%.

To recover an original price, divide the sale price by the combined remaining-price factor. To find percent off from two prices, use (original − sale) ÷ original × 100%.

Example

A $100 item discounted 20% costs $80 before tax. Applying another 10% discount reduces it to $72, for an effective discount of 28% and total savings of $28.

Order calculation assumptions

  • Percentage discounts are applied before the fixed coupon.
  • The coupon cannot reduce merchandise below zero.
  • Tax is calculated after discounts and the coupon.
  • You choose whether shipping belongs in the taxable amount.
  • Local tax, coupon and shipping rules vary; use the actual checkout rules.
