Septic Tank Size Calculator
Estimate a planning capacity from wastewater flow, retention, reserve and a local minimum. Optionally compare it with the liquid volume measured inside a rectangular tank.
What this septic tank calculator does
This tool combines an entered design population, wastewater allowance, peak factor, retention period, reserve and local minimum. It then rounds upward to an entered nominal tank-size increment. Every sizing assumption remains visible and editable because septic requirements differ by jurisdiction, building use, soil evaluation and permit conditions.
Formulas
Base daily flow = design occupants × wastewater allowance per person
Adjusted design flow = base daily flow × peak factor
Flow-based capacity = adjusted design flow × retention days × (1 + reserve percentage)
Planning capacity = greater of flow-based capacity or entered local minimum
Rectangular liquid capacity = inside length × inside width × working liquid depth
Checked example
The default example uses three bedrooms, two planning occupants per bedroom, 60 US gallons per person per day, a 1.25 design factor, two days of retention and 20% reserve. Base flow is 360 gal/day, adjusted flow is 450 gal/day, working volume is 900 gal and reserve is 180 gal. The resulting 1,080 gal planning capacity rounds upward to 1,250 gal using a 250-gallon nominal increment. An 8 ft × 4 ft × 4 ft liquid volume holds about 957.51 gal, or about 292.49 gal less than the rounded planning capacity.
How to use the result safely
- Enter the population, per-person allowance, design factor, minimum capacity and reserve required by the authority or qualified designer reviewing the property.
- Do not treat the default values as a permit table, engineering standard or national rule.
- For an existing rectangular tank, measure inside liquid dimensions. Wall thickness, freeboard, baffles and unusable space are not liquid capacity.
- Round upward to a real locally available tank size, then confirm access, compartments, inlet/outlet elevations and installation requirements.
Important limits
This calculator is a planning estimator, not a septic-system design or permit approval. It does not size a drain field, absorption area, dosing system, pump chamber or reserve field. It does not evaluate soil, percolation, groundwater separation, setbacks, seasonal use, commercial fixtures, garbage disposals, high-strength waste, infiltration, sludge storage, compartment rules or local construction requirements.

Frequently asked questions
Does bedroom count determine the permitted septic tank size?
It can be one input, but the applicable rule may use bedrooms, design occupants, plumbing fixtures, daily flow or a prescribed minimum table. Enter the values required for the project instead of assuming the defaults are code.
Why does the calculator ask for a local minimum?
A flow formula can produce a value below a jurisdiction’s minimum tank capacity. The calculator uses the greater value and clearly shows which threshold controls.
Does tank capacity determine drain-field size?
No. Drain-field sizing depends on separate design flow, soil or loading criteria, site conditions and local rules. This page deliberately does not infer it from tank capacity.
