How to build a kitchen remodeling budget
- Measure the kitchen floor, cabinet run, countertop and backsplash in one unit system.
- Enter prices per linear unit or square unit from current quotes.
- Add appliances, fixtures, labor, demolition, permits, design and any costs not covered by the measured items.
- Choose a contingency percentage for scope uncertainty; the calculator applies it to the full base subtotal.
- Compare the result with written, itemized contractor and supplier quotes before committing funds.
Checked example: a 12 × 10 ft kitchen has 120 sq ft of floor. With 10% waste, the flooring order area is 132 sq ft. The sample inputs produce a base subtotal of $23,380.50, a 10% contingency of $2,338.05 and a total of $25,718.55.
Formulas used
Floor area = kitchen length × width. Flooring order area = floor area × (1 + waste percentage ÷ 100). Countertop area = countertop length × depth. Backsplash area = backsplash length × height. Each measured cost equals its length or area multiplied by the entered rate. Base subtotal = all measured and fixed costs. Contingency = base subtotal × contingency percentage ÷ 100. Total budget = base subtotal + contingency.
What this calculator includes
The breakdown separates cabinets, countertops, flooring, backsplash, appliances, fixtures and plumbing, labor, demolition and disposal, permits and design, and other entered costs. Zero is allowed when an item is excluded or already included in another quote. Currency selection changes formatting only; it does not convert exchange rates.
Important limits
This is an itemized arithmetic budget, not a location-based bid. It does not infer labor rates, material grades, structural work, asbestos or lead remediation, code requirements, financing, taxes, temporary kitchens, delivery, change orders or hidden conditions. Countertop cutouts, seams, edges and slab layout may add costs beyond a simple area rate. Confirm measurements, inclusions, permits, taxes and payment terms with qualified local professionals.
