Calculation formula

Daily kWh = input watts × total minutes per session × sessions per day / 60000. Period energy = daily energy × days. Period cost = period energy × price per kWh.

Use a microwave's electrical input watts to estimate electricity use. The cooking-wattage number on the front or in a recipe is a different quantity. As a documented example, GE's discontinued JE520BW is rated at 600 W cooking output and 950 W electrical input at 120 V.

Why a 600 W microwave can draw 950 W

GE lists the JE520BW's cooking output under its microwave features and its 950 W input under electrical ratings. That distinction is why cooking watts should not be entered as wall consumption. This older model is an example of the terminology, not a current purchase recommendation or a universal input/output ratio. Look up both ratings for your exact model.

Ten minutes at 950 W input

Assuming the input stays at 950 W during ten minutes of operation, energy is 950 × (10 ÷ 60) ÷ 1,000 = 0.1583 kWh. Repeating once daily for 30 days gives 4.75 kWh, costing $0.95 at an illustrative $0.20/kWh. A lower power-level setting may change the operating pattern, so this simple calculation is for the stated constant input.

Energy (kWh) = average electrical input watts × hours ÷ 1,000. Multiply energy by the actual price per kWh for the energy charge. Include other billing components separately. The watts to kWh calculator handles another duration.

Cooking power, operating pattern and other functions

GE provides model-specific instructions for changing cooking power levels. Do not assume that a 50% cooking setting makes the appliance draw exactly half its rated input at every instant. Include the actual operating pattern and any relevant standby use. Combination appliances may use different input power for microwave, convection or grill functions; consult the selected mode's specifications. Never open the cabinet to measure internal power.

Use the right inputs in the electricity-cost calculator

Enter one device or add it to a household inventory. When watts already represent the average over your entered hours, use a 100% duty factor. When watts represent an on-state value, use accumulated on-time or an appropriate duty factor, but do not apply both reductions. Keep product ratings, measured results and assumptions distinguishable in your comparison.

Can I calculate energy from the recipe's 1,000 W rating?

Not reliably. That usually refers to cooking output; use electrical input and actual operating time.

Is 1,200 W always the input of a 1,000 W microwave?

No. There is no single conversion factor valid for every design and mode.

Which rating matters for a power station?

Check electrical input, output compatibility and any transient requirements against the power station documentation, separately from its stored energy.
