Calculation formula

Daily kWh = (motor watts × fan hours + light watts × light hours) / 1000. Period energy = daily energy × days. Period cost = period energy × price per kWh.

Use the wattage for your ceiling fan's actual speed, and add the light kit separately if it is not included in the measurement. As an example, a 45 W motor running eight hours uses 0.36 kWh. A separate 18 W light used four hours adds 0.072 kWh.

Motor watts, light watts and airflow

ENERGY STAR identifies motor and blade design as factors in fan efficiency. Compare the airflow delivered along with power consumption; a lower watt number alone does not establish that two fans provide the same service. If the manufacturer's table gives several speeds, use the row matching your setting rather than the maximum rating for all operating hours.

A fan and light on different schedules

With the illustrative 45 W fan and 18 W light above, total daily energy is 0.432 kWh. Over 30 identical days that is 12.96 kWh, costing $2.59 at an assumed $0.20/kWh. If the light is already included in a measured whole-fixture value, do not add it a second time.

Energy (kWh) = average electrical input watts × hours ÷ 1,000. Multiply energy by the actual price per kWh for the energy charge. Include other billing components separately. The watts to kWh calculator handles another duration.

Compare speeds with an operating schedule

If a fan uses an assumed 25 W for six hours and 60 W for two hours, the motor uses 0.15 + 0.12 = 0.27 kWh. Enter the two intervals separately in an appliance inventory, or enter an average 33.75 W over eight hours. Do not combine that average with another speed duty factor. For a permanently wired fan, use existing product information or suitable professional measurement rather than an improvised plug connection.

Use the right inputs in the electricity-cost calculator

Enter one device or add it to a household inventory. When watts already represent the average over your entered hours, use a 100% duty factor. When watts represent an on-state value, use accumulated on-time or an appropriate duty factor, but do not apply both reductions. Keep product ratings, measured results and assumptions distinguishable in your comparison.

Frequently asked questions

Do all 52-inch fans use the same watts?

No. Blade diameter does not specify motor efficiency, speed or light-kit power.

Can I add three light bulbs to the fan's wattage?

Yes, if their input is not already included, using their actual electrical watts and operating hours.

Is a fan's electricity use the same as an air conditioner's?

They perform different functions. Calculate each device from its own input and schedule rather than replacing one load with the other in a cost table.
