Federal Income Tax Percentage Calculator 2026

2026 Federal Income Tax Percentage Calculator

Estimate 2026 U.S. federal ordinary income tax, marginal bracket, effective tax percentage and refund or balance using official IRS thresholds.

Use adjustments that reduce adjusted gross income, such as eligible deductible IRA or HSA contributions. Do not enter payroll withholding here.

Credits and withholding

Credits cannot reduce this estimate below zero. Withholding changes the projected refund or balance, not the tax calculation.

Tax year: 2026 returns generally filed in 2027. This estimator applies ordinary-income brackets and the basic standard deduction published by the IRS. It is not tax advice or a tax return.

How the 2026 federal income tax estimate works

The calculator first subtracts eligible pre-tax adjustments to estimate adjusted gross income. It then subtracts either the 2026 basic standard deduction or the custom deduction entered above. The remaining taxable ordinary income is divided across the progressive federal brackets. Each slice is taxed only at its own rate.

Estimated tax = sum of tax from every occupied bracket − usable nonrefundable credits. The result cannot fall below zero. Effective tax percentage equals estimated federal income tax divided by gross income. The marginal rate is the rate that applies to the next dollar of taxable ordinary income.

Checked examples

  • A single filer with $85,000 of ordinary income and $5,000 of adjustments has estimated AGI of $80,000. After the $16,100 standard deduction, taxable income is $63,900 and tax before credits is $8,770.
  • A married couple filing jointly with $100,000 of AGI and no adjustments has $67,800 of taxable income after the $32,200 standard deduction. Estimated tax before credits is $7,640.
  • If entered withholding exceeds estimated tax, the difference is shown as a possible refund. If it is lower, the calculator shows the possible remaining balance.

Important limits

This is a transparent ordinary-income estimate, not Form 1040 preparation. It does not automatically calculate preferential rates for qualified dividends or long-term capital gains, self-employment tax, payroll taxes, net investment income tax, alternative minimum tax, state or local taxes, refundable credits, credit eligibility, phaseouts, dependent rules, additional deductions for age or blindness, or special 2026 deductions. Enter only adjustments, deductions and credits you have independently determined are applicable.

Tax laws and individual facts can change the result. Compare the estimate with current IRS instructions or a qualified tax professional before filing or changing withholding.
