Ceiling Tile Calculator
Estimate ceiling tiles for one rectangular room, compare tile orientations, add waste, round to full cartons and calculate purchased coverage and cost.
Planning limit: the row-by-column result is a conservative rectangular layout count. Edge offcuts may sometimes be reused, while centered borders, patterns, directional faces, damaged tiles, fixtures and irregular rooms may require more. Grid runners, cross tees, hangers and seismic bracing are product- and design-specific and are not calculated here.
Ceiling tile formulas
- Ceiling area = room length × room width.
- Rows = ceiling(room length ÷ installed tile length).
- Columns = ceiling(room width ÷ installed tile width).
- Layout tiles = rows × columns.
- Tiles after waste = ceiling(layout tiles × [1 + waste %]).
- Cartons = ceiling(tiles after waste ÷ tiles per carton).
Automatic orientation evaluates the tile in both directions and uses the layout with fewer whole tile positions. It does not rotate individual tiles within the same grid.
Calculated examples
| Room and tile | Best rectangular layout | Tiles before waste |
|---|---|---|
| 12 × 10 ft room; 24 × 24 in tile | 6 × 5 | 30 |
| 14 × 12 ft room; 48 × 24 in tile | 7 × 3 rotated | 21 |
| 20 × 15 ft room; 48 × 24 in tile | 5 × 8 lengthwise | 40 |
| 13 × 11 ft room; 24 × 24 in tile | 7 × 6 | 42 |
| 4.2 × 3.6 m room; 60 × 60 cm tile | 7 × 6 | 42 |
| 6 × 4.8 m room; 120 × 60 cm tile | 5 × 8 lengthwise | 40 |
How to measure and order
- Measure the finished ceiling length and width, not the floor plan before wall finishes.
- Enter the actual tile dimensions printed on the product label.
- Use automatic orientation for the lower conservative grid count, or lock the direction when the face pattern or grid layout requires it.
- Add waste for cuts, breakage, future replacements and product-specific recommendations.
- Enter the exact carton quantity and price from the supplier; cartons and cost are rounded to purchasable units.
