Overtime Calculator: Time-and-a-Half & Double Time Pay

Time-and-a-half and double-time tool

Overtime Calculator

Calculate regular, overtime and double-time earnings from total hours or from hours already separated by pay category.

Formatting only; no exchange-rate conversion.

Total-hours method

Hours above the threshold are assigned to overtime. The calculator does not decide which legal threshold applies.

1.5 is time-and-a-half; 2 is double time.

Overtime pay formulas

Total pay = regular pay + overtime pay + double-time pay.

  • Regular pay = regular rate × regular hours
  • Overtime pay = regular rate × overtime hours × overtime multiplier
  • Double-time pay = regular rate × double-time hours × double-time multiplier

The premium above straight time is rate × overtime hours × max(overtime multiplier − 1, 0) plus the equivalent expression for double-time hours. It is already included in total gross pay.

In total-hours mode, regular hours = min(total hours, threshold) and overtime hours = max(total hours − threshold, 0).

Choosing a method

Use total-hours mode for a simple threshold scenario. Use category mode when a timekeeping or payroll system has already separated regular, overtime and double-time hours. Do not enter the same hours in more than one category.

Important: this calculator performs pay arithmetic; it does not determine whether a worker is exempt, which hours legally count, or whether daily, weekly, seventh-day, collective-agreement or jurisdiction-specific rules apply. Enter the threshold, categories and multipliers that have already been determined for the situation.

Limits and assumptions

  • Hourly rate: greater than 0 through 1,000,000.
  • Each hours field: 0 through 1,000; total hours in threshold mode must be greater than 0.
  • Multipliers: 0.01 through 10 and treated as total rates, not extra premiums.
  • At least one category hour must be positive in category mode; total calculated pay cannot exceed 1 billion.
  • Currency changes formatting only. Results are gross amounts before taxes and deductions.

Frequently asked questions

What is time-and-a-half?

Time-and-a-half is 1.5 times the regular hourly rate. At $20 per hour, the time-and-a-half rate is $30 per hour.

What is double time?

Double time is 2 times the regular hourly rate. At $20 per hour, the double-time rate is $40 per hour.

Is the premium the same as overtime pay?

No. Overtime pay includes straight-time value plus the premium. For 10 hours at $20 and 1.5×, overtime pay is $300; the premium portion alone is $100.

Does this calculate taxes or the 2026 overtime tax deduction?

No. It calculates gross earnings only and does not determine tax eligibility, withholding or deductions.
