How to use the swim pace calculator
- Choose whether to find pace from a completed swim or predict finish time from a target pace.
- Enter distance in meters, yards, kilometers, miles or pool lengths.
- Select a 25 m, 50 m or 25 yd pool. A custom length is available for nonstandard pools.
- Enter elapsed time or target pace, then calculate. Open the split settings if you want another interval.
Swim pace formulas
The calculator first converts the swim distance to meters. It then uses constant average speed:
Seconds per meter = total seconds ÷ distance in meters
Pace for an interval = seconds per meter × interval length
Projected finish time = distance × target pace ÷ pace-basis distance
One yard is exactly 0.9144 meters. A 100-yard pace is therefore calculated for 91.44 meters at the same average speed. This is a mathematical speed conversion, not an adjustment for the different number of turns in short-course yards and metric pools.
Checked examples
1,500 m in 30 minutes
Thirty minutes is 1,800 seconds. Dividing by 1,500 m gives 1.2 seconds per meter, or 2:00 per 100 m. In a 25 m pool, the swim is 60 lengths and each length averages 30 seconds.
500 yd in 8 minutes
Eight minutes is 480 seconds. Dividing by five 100-yard intervals gives 1:36 per 100 yd. The same average speed is about 1:44.99 per 100 m.
1:45 per 100 m for 1,500 m
A 1,500 m swim contains fifteen 100 m intervals. Fifteen times 105 seconds gives 1,575 seconds, so the projected finish is 26:15.
Pool lengths and split interpretation
A length is one trip from one end of the pool to the other. A lap can be used inconsistently to mean one length or a down-and-back trip, so this calculator reports lengths explicitly. Standard presets cover 25-yard, 25-meter and 50-meter pools. Enter the measured length for another pool.
The cumulative split table assumes constant speed from start to finish. Real splits vary with starts, turns, fatigue, drafting, currents and stops. For open-water swims, use the measured course distance and treat pool-length output only as a comparison.
Important limits
- Meter-yard conversion preserves mathematical speed; it does not predict race performance across courses with different turns, starts or pool conditions.
- GPS and open-water course measurements can differ from the path actually swum.
- Training pace should be selected for the swimmer, stroke, set structure and recovery. This calculator does not prescribe workouts or medical limits.
- For official results, use the timing and course rules of the governing organization.

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate pace per 100 meters?
Convert the total time to seconds, divide by the distance in meters, then multiply by 100. Convert the resulting seconds back to minutes and seconds.
Can I enter pool lengths instead of distance?
Yes. Select pool lengths as the distance unit and choose the pool length. The calculator converts the length count into a physical distance.
Does 1:30 per 100 yd equal 1:30 per 100 m?
No. One hundred yards is 91.44 meters. At identical speed, 1:30 per 100 yd is about 1:38.43 per 100 m.
Why can converted pool times differ from actual results?
Different course lengths change the number of walls, turns and push-offs. The converter holds average speed constant and does not model those effects.
