Brick Calculator for Walls
Estimate wall bricks from net face area, actual brick dimensions, mortar-joint thickness, wall layers, allowance, pallet quantity and price.
Brick quantity formulas
The calculator treats one laid brick as a rectangular face module that includes one horizontal and one vertical mortar joint.
Module face area = (brick length + joint) × (brick height + joint).
Net wall area = gross wall face area − openings.
Calculated bricks = net wall area ÷ module face area × wall layers.
Bricks to order = calculated bricks × (1 + allowance % ÷ 100), rounded up.
Pallets represented equals ordered bricks divided by the entered pallet quantity, rounded up. Cost equals ordered bricks multiplied by the entered price per brick.
Six calculated examples
| Wall and brick assumptions | Calculated result |
|---|---|
| 20 × 8 ft; 7.625 × 2.25 in brick; 0.375 in joint; one layer; 5% | 160 ft² net; 1,098 bricks before allowance; 1,152 bricks to order; 3 pallets at 500 |
| 20 × 8 ft minus 21 ft² opening; same brick; one layer; 5% | 139 ft² net; 954 bricks before allowance; 1,001 bricks to order; 3 pallets at 500 |
| 10 × 8 ft; 8 × 2.25 in brick; 0.5 in joint; one layer; 10% | 80 ft² net; 493 bricks before allowance; 543 bricks to order |
| 100 ft² direct area; modular US brick; two layers; 5% | 1,372 bricks before allowance; 1,440 bricks to order |
| 10 × 2.5 m; 215 × 65 mm brick; 10 mm joint; one layer; 5% | 25 m² net; 1,482 bricks before allowance; 1,556 bricks to order |
| 100 m² direct minus 10 m²; same metric brick; one layer; 5% | 90 m² net; 5,334 bricks before allowance; 5,600 bricks to order; 12 pallets at 500 |
How to use this brick calculator
- Choose wall dimensions or enter a measured face area directly.
- Subtract door and window areas only when they are not already excluded.
- Enter actual brick face dimensions and the intended mortar-joint thickness. Do not enter nominal module dimensions and then add the joint again.
- Use one layer for a single-wythe face. Increase the layer count only when the same face area genuinely has additional brick wythes.
- Set an explicit cutting/breakage allowance and copy the supplier’s pallet quantity and unit price.
