Calculation formula
Daily kWh = input watts × total minutes per session × sessions per day / 60000. Period energy = daily energy × days. Period cost = period energy × price per kWh.
Use the electrical wattage on your air fryer's label and the actual cooking profile. For example, an assumed 1,700 W input sustained for 20 minutes uses 0.567 kWh. The total session can differ because preheating, temperature control and cooking mode change how long the heating element is active.

Rated watts and energy per meal
A power rating describes an operating capacity, while kWh describes energy over the whole cooking session. SharkNinja's South African air-fryer listing includes a 1,700 W Crispi model; that is a specific regional product example, not a rating for every air fryer. Check your own model and supply version. Two baskets or two cooking zones do not automatically mean twice the wattage on the appliance label.
Include preheat and multiple batches
Under a deliberately simplified constant-input assumption, 1,700 W for five minutes of preheat plus 20 minutes cooking uses 1.7 × 25 ÷ 60 = 0.708 kWh. At an illustrative $0.20/kWh this is about $0.14. A second batch increases operating time; thermostat cycling can lower consumption relative to uninterrupted full power.

Energy (kWh) = average electrical input watts × hours ÷ 1,000. Multiply energy by the actual price per kWh for the energy charge. Include other billing components separately. The watts to kWh calculator handles another duration.
Compare the same meal, not only the appliance label
An air fryer and a larger oven may have different preheat times, cooking times and batch capacities. Compare measured energy to prepare the same quantity of food to the same required outcome. If the air fryer needs several batches, include them all. A lower nameplate wattage is not by itself proof of lower energy per meal. Follow the appliance instructions for supply connection, ventilation and food preparation.
Use the right inputs in the electricity-cost calculator
Enter one device or add it to a household inventory. When watts already represent the average over your entered hours, use a 100% duty factor. When watts represent an on-state value, use accumulated on-time or an appropriate duty factor, but do not apply both reductions. Keep product ratings, measured results and assumptions distinguishable in your comparison.
Frequently asked questions
Does a 2,000 W air fryer use 2 kWh every time?
Only if it draws 2,000 W continuously for one hour. A shorter or cycling session uses a different amount.
Do I multiply the rating by two for dual baskets?
Not unless the documentation requires that interpretation. The label may already describe the whole appliance.
Can I omit preheating from the cost?
Only if the appliance did not preheat. Include every powered part of the cooking session in a fair comparison.
