Calculation formula
Daily kWh = (light-work watts × hours + heavy-work watts × hours) / 1000. Period energy = daily energy × days. Period cost = period energy × price per kWh.
A laptop's charger wattage is not a constant reading of wall power. A 65 W adapter rating describes its output capability; actual consumption depends on computer workload, battery charging and conversion losses. For electricity cost, use measured AC input or an explicitly assumed average over your work session.

Read output and input without mixing them
An adapter may list DC output voltage and current, as well as AC input ratings. For a hypothetical 20 V, 3.25 A output, rated output power is 65 W. That does not mean the laptop always draws 65 W, nor that wall input equals DC output. Dell provides model-specific adapter information in the computer's setup and specification documentation.
One working day with two power levels
Suppose an AC energy measurement averages 30 W for six hours of light work and 80 W for two hours of heavier work. Total energy is 0.18 + 0.16 = 0.34 kWh. Across 22 such workdays it becomes 7.48 kWh, costing $1.50 at an illustrative $0.20/kWh. This example excludes an external monitor and separately powered accessories.

Energy (kWh) = average electrical input watts × hours ÷ 1,000. Multiply energy by the actual price per kWh for the energy charge. Include other billing components separately. The watts to kWh calculator handles another duration.
Include charging and accessories consistently
A session beginning with an empty battery may draw more energy than a similar session starting fully charged. Compare equivalent battery conditions or log longer periods. A USB-C dock may power the laptop and accessories together; avoid counting the same energy twice. Charger compatibility also requires the correct voltage profiles, connector, cable and device support, not just a sufficiently large watt number.
Use the right inputs in the electricity-cost calculator
Enter one device or add it to a household inventory. When watts already represent the average over your entered hours, use a 100% duty factor. When watts represent an on-state value, use accumulated on-time or an appropriate duty factor, but do not apply both reductions. Keep product ratings, measured results and assumptions distinguishable in your comparison.
Frequently asked questions
Will a 100 W charger force 100 W into the laptop?
Its rating alone does not establish draw. Actual delivery depends on compatibility and the device's operating and charging requirements.
Can I calculate battery runtime from AC wall watts?
Not directly without accounting for different measurement points, usable battery energy and conversion losses.
Does sleep mode use zero electricity?
Do not assume zero. Measure the intended state or consult model-specific documentation.
