Print, screen and mouse density tool
DPI and PPI Calculator
Calculate print size from pixels and PPI, pixels required for a print, actual image PPI, screen pixel density and pitch, or mouse eDPI and equivalent sensitivity.
PPI and DPI formulas
For an image or print, PPI = pixels ÷ inches. Print size in inches is pixels ÷ target PPI, while required pixels are inches × target PPI.
For a screen, PPI = √(horizontal pixels² + vertical pixels²) ÷ diagonal inches. Pixel pitch is 25.4 ÷ PPI millimeters.
For a mouse in one game, eDPI = mouse DPI × in-game sensitivity. Equivalent sensitivity at a new DPI is eDPI ÷ new DPI.
PPI and DPI are not identical. PPI describes image or display pixels per inch. Printer DPI describes physical ink or toner dots per inch; a printer can use multiple dots to reproduce one image pixel. This tool uses PPI for image and screen calculations and labels the mouse setting as DPI.
Checked examples
| Mode | Inputs | Checked result |
|---|---|---|
| Print size | 6000 × 4000 px at 300 PPI | 20 × 13.333 in; 50.8 × 33.867 cm |
| Required pixels | 10 × 8 in at 300 PPI | 3000 × 2400 px; 7.2 MP |
| Actual PPI | 2400 × 1800 px printed at 10 × 7.5 in | 240 PPI on both axes |
| Screen | 1920 × 1080 px, 24 in diagonal | 91.788 PPI; 0.2767 mm pitch |
| Mouse | 1600 DPI, 0.35 sensitivity, new DPI 800 | 560 eDPI; equivalent sensitivity 0.7 |
Limits and interpretation
- Print calculations assume square pixels and no resampling, cropping or bleed.
- If horizontal and vertical PPI differ, the entered print shape does not match the image aspect ratio and would require cropping or distortion.
- Screen size is the viewable diagonal, not the outside dimensions of the monitor or phone.
- Mouse eDPI is comparable only when the games use the same sensitivity scale and no other scaling, acceleration or field-of-view conversion changes.
- Printer quality depends on ink placement, halftoning, viewing distance, media and workflow; a target PPI is a planning input, not a guarantee.
- Pixel inputs must be whole positive values. All other inputs must be positive and remain within the displayed limits.
