Build your emergency fund plan
Estimate a reserve from essential monthly expenses, the number of months you want covered, and a separate one-time cushion. Then find the monthly saving needed by a deadline or the time required at your current pace.
How to use the emergency fund calculator
- Enter only expenses you would still need to pay during an income interruption.
- Choose how many months those expenses should cover and add any separate one-time cushion.
- Enter current emergency savings, then calculate either a monthly saving amount for a deadline or the time needed at a fixed monthly contribution.
Formula
Let E be total essential monthly expenses, m the chosen coverage months, R the one-time cushion, and S current emergency savings.
Target = E × m + R
Gap = max(Target − S, 0)
Monthly saving for a deadline = Gap ÷ deadline months
Months at a fixed contribution = ceiling(Gap ÷ monthly contribution)
This calculator intentionally assumes no investment return. An emergency reserve is normally planned for liquidity and predictability, and the interest actually credited may vary by account and timing.
Checked example
Suppose essential expenses are $1,500 housing, $250 utilities, $500 groceries, $300 transportation, $250 insurance and health, and $200 minimum debt payments. The total is $3,000 per month. Six months of expenses plus a $2,000 one-time cushion creates a $20,000 target. With $5,000 already saved, the gap is $15,000. Reaching it in 12 months requires $1,250 per month. Saving $1,000 per month instead takes 15 whole months.
What belongs in essential expenses?
| Usually include | Review or reduce |
|---|---|
| Housing, basic utilities and groceries | Dining out and entertainment |
| Insurance, medicine and necessary care | Optional subscriptions |
| Essential transportation | Discretionary travel |
| Minimum required debt payments | Extra debt payments above the minimum |
Limits and assumptions
