Dividend portfolio formulas

Annual dividend per share = dividend per payment × payments per year

Holding annual income = shares × annual dividend per share

Holding market value = shares × current price

Portfolio dividend yield = total annual income ÷ total market value × 100

Portfolio yield on cost = total annual income ÷ total cost basis × 100

Required portfolio value = target annual income ÷ current portfolio yield as a decimal

Portfolio yield is a value-weighted result: it equals the sum of all annual dividend income divided by the total current market value. Yield on cost uses the entered acquisition cost instead of current price. Neither measure is a total-return forecast.

Verified example

A portfolio contains 100 shares at US$50 paying US$0.50 quarterly, 50 shares at US$80 paying US$0.75 quarterly, and 200 shares at US$25 paying US$0.10 monthly. Their market values total US$14,000 and annual dividend income is US$590, or US$49.17 per average month. The weighted dividend yield is 4.214286%.

If the cost bases are US$40, US$70 and US$24 per share, total cost is US$12,300 and portfolio yield on cost is 4.796748%. At the current 4.214286% yield, a US$1,000 annual-income target corresponds to about US$23,728.81 of portfolio value.

How to interpret the breakdown

Portfolio weight shows each holding’s share of current market value. Income share shows how much of total dividend income comes from that holding. A large difference between these percentages identifies positions with yields above or below the portfolio average and can reveal income concentration.

Limits and assumptions

  • Use 2 to 10 holdings. Fractional shares are supported to six decimals; each holding must contain more than zero shares.
  • Prices, dividends and cost bases use up to six decimals and are limited to 1,000,000,000,000 per share. Current price and cost basis must be positive; a dividend may be zero.
  • Payment frequency must be annual, semiannual, quarterly or monthly. The calculator assumes the entered regular dividend repeats at that frequency.
  • The target and all displayed totals are limited to the supported numeric range. A required portfolio value cannot be estimated when the portfolio yield is 0%.
  • The model excludes dividend changes, special distributions, taxes, withholding, fees, currency conversion, price changes and reinvestment. Use the single-position Dividend Calculator for a growth and reinvestment projection.
Risk note: Dividends can be reduced or suspended. A high yield can reflect a falling share price and does not guarantee income, capital preservation or total return.
