Acreage formulas and exact conversions

The calculator converts every input to square feet before producing the other units. The core relationships are:

  • 1 acre = 43,560 square feet = 4,840 square yards.
  • 1 acre = 4,046.8564224 square meters.
  • 1 hectare = 10,000 square meters ≈ 2.4710538147 acres.
  • 1 square mile = 640 acres.
  • Rectangle area = length × width.
  • Triangle area = base × perpendicular height ÷ 2.
  • Circle area = π × radius².
  • Trapezoid area = (parallel side A + parallel side B) × perpendicular height ÷ 2.

Worked example: one acre from dimensions

A square with sides of about 208.7103 feet has an area of 43,560 square feet, which is one acre. If a rectangular parcel must contain one acre and its known side is 200 feet, the missing side is 43,560 ÷ 200 = 217.8 feet.

Accuracy and limits

Shape calculations assume level, straight dimensions and the geometry named in the selected mode. Four boundary lengths alone do not uniquely determine the area of an irregular parcel, so this calculator does not pretend they do. For an irregular or curved boundary, divide the plan into measured shapes or use a professional survey. A calculated subdivision count is mathematical only; zoning, access, setbacks, easements, utilities and local minimum-lot rules are not evaluated.
