Landscaping Cost Calculator: Itemized Yard Budget

Landscaping Cost Calculator

Build an itemized yard budget from measured coverage, entered rates, plants, edging, fixed project costs and contingency.

Fixed costs and contingency

Lawn, bed and hardscape percentages divide the project footprint and cannot exceed 100% combined. Irrigation may overlap those areas. Defaults are a checked example, not local price averages.

How to estimate a landscaping project

  1. Measure the rectangular project footprint in one unit system.
  2. Allocate percentages to lawn or sod, planting beds, and hardscape. Their combined coverage cannot exceed the footprint.
  3. Enter rates per square unit from current material quotes or installed bids, using the same scope consistently.
  4. Add irrigation coverage, edging, plants, trees and fixed costs for grading, drainage, lighting, removal, labor, design and permits.
  5. Apply a contingency allowance, then compare the itemized result with written local quotes.

Checked example: a 60 × 40 ft project contains 2,400 sq ft. Lawn, planting beds and hardscape allocate 85%, or 2,040 sq ft, leaving 360 sq ft unallocated. The sample inputs produce a base subtotal of $24,270.00, a 10% contingency of $2,427.00 and a total of $26,697.00.

Formulas used

Project area = length × width. Each surface area = project area × its coverage percentage ÷ 100. Irrigated area uses the same calculation but may overlap the other surfaces. Each area cost = area × entered rate. Edging cost = length × rate. Plant and tree costs = count × average entered cost. Base subtotal = all measured, counted and fixed costs. Contingency = base subtotal × contingency percentage ÷ 100. Total budget = base subtotal + contingency.

Avoid double counting

Decide whether the surface rates represent materials only or installed work. If an installed rate already includes labor, do not enter that labor again in the additional-labor field. Likewise, set an item to zero when it is outside the project or already included in another quote. Currency selection changes formatting only and does not convert exchange rates.

Important limits

This is an itemized arithmetic estimate, not a location-based bid or landscape design. It does not infer site slope, soil conditions, drainage engineering, underground utilities, access constraints, plant survival, irrigation zones, water supply, taxes, delivery, maintenance, code requirements or permit approval. Irregular sites should be divided into measured sections and the equivalent total area entered. Confirm quantities, scope and exclusions with qualified local professionals.
