How to estimate a bathroom remodeling budget
- Measure the bathroom floor and wall height in one unit system.
- Enter the percentage of the room perimeter that will receive tile or another paid wall finish. Use 100% for all four walls or a smaller percentage for selected walls.
- Enter material or installed rates from current quotes, plus the vanity width and linear-unit price.
- Add fixture, trade, labor, demolition, permit, design and other fixed costs without duplicating items already included in a quote.
- Choose a contingency percentage for uncertainty, then compare the itemized result with written local bids.
Checked example: an 8 × 5 ft bathroom has 40 sq ft of floor. With 10% waste, the floor order area is 44 sq ft. An 8 ft wall height and 50% perimeter coverage produce 104 sq ft of wall finish, or 114.4 sq ft with 10% waste. The sample inputs produce a base subtotal of $17,044.00, a 10% contingency of $1,704.40 and a total of $18,748.40.
Formulas used
Floor area = bathroom length × width. Floor order area = floor area × (1 + floor waste percentage ÷ 100). Wall finish area = 2 × (length + width) × wall height × wall coverage percentage ÷ 100. Wall order area = wall finish area × (1 + wall waste percentage ÷ 100). Vanity cost = vanity width × vanity rate. Base subtotal = all measured and fixed costs. Contingency = base subtotal × contingency percentage ÷ 100. Total budget = base subtotal + contingency.
What this calculator includes
The breakdown separates floor finish, wall finish, vanity, shower or tub, toilet, faucets and accessories, plumbing, electrical and ventilation, labor, demolition, permits and design, and other entered costs. Zero is allowed when an item is excluded or included elsewhere. Currency selection changes formatting only; it does not convert exchange rates.
Important limits
This is an itemized arithmetic budget, not a location-based bid. It does not infer labor rates, product grades, waterproofing systems, subfloor or framing repairs, moving drains, code requirements, taxes, delivery, hazardous-material remediation, accessibility work or concealed damage. Wall coverage is a simplified percentage of the full room perimeter; subtract openings or enter a more precise equivalent percentage when needed. Confirm scope, measurements, permit requirements and payment terms with qualified local professionals.
