Concrete Steps Calculator
Estimate solid concrete steps, total rise and run, landing volume, bags, ready-mix and cost.
How to calculate concrete for steps
Enter the number of equal tread blocks before the landing, stair width, tread depth and riser height. This calculator models a solid stepped mass: the first tread is one riser high, the second is two risers high, and so on. Add the landing separately and subtract only a known internal fill volume.
Formulas
Solid step volume per flight = width × tread × riser × n(n + 1) ÷ 2. Landing volume = width × landing length × landing thickness. Net volume = solid steps + landing − known fill. Order volume = net volume × (1 + allowance ÷ 100). Bags are always rounded up.
Checked example
Four solid steps, 4 ft wide, with 12 in treads and 7 in risers use 23.3333 ft³. A 4 × 4 ft landing at 4 in adds 5.3333 ft³. With 10% extra, order 31.5333 ft³ = 1.168 yd³. At 0.60 ft³ per bag, purchase 53 bags.
Important limits
- The formula describes solid rectangular steps. It is not appropriate for a suspended stair, waist slab, precast unit, masonry core or irregular monolithic profile unless the actual non-concrete volume is known.
- The number entered is the number of tread blocks before the landing. Confirm field dimensions; code-compliant rise, run, nosing, handrails and landings are separate design decisions.
- The surface result totals horizontal treads and vertical riser faces. It is not formwork, finish material or waterproofing quantity.
- This calculator does not design reinforcement, foundations, frost protection, drainage, strength, connections, edge thickening or structural support.
- Confirm bag yield, ready-mix minimums, short-load fees, delivery, tax, access and placement method with suppliers.
