How winning percentage is calculated

For a record with no ties, winning percentage is wins divided by total games, multiplied by 100. When ties are present, this calculator uses the selected tie value:

Winning percentage = (wins + tie value × ties) ÷ (wins + losses + ties) × 100

The common half-win convention gives each tie a value of 0.5. Some sports and ranking systems treat ties differently, so the selector also supports 0 or 1.

Target and projection formulas

Future wins, losses, and ties are added to the current record before the projected percentage is calculated. For a target expressed as a decimal p, current credited wins s, and current games g, the calculator finds the smallest whole number x satisfying (s + x) ÷ (g + x) ≥ p. It also finds how many additional consecutive losses can occur while s ÷ (g + x) ≥ p remains true.

Examples

  • An 8–2 record has an 80% winning percentage.
  • A 9–0–1 record with a tie worth 0.5 has a 95% winning percentage.
  • A 0–0–2 record with half-win ties has a 50% winning percentage.
  • An 8–2 record followed by two wins and one loss projects to 10–3, or 76.92%.
  • A 50–50 record needs 25 consecutive wins to reach 60%.
  • An 80–20 record can absorb six consecutive losses and remain at or above 75%.

Important limits

  • The tool is arithmetic only. It does not predict the outcome of future games.
  • League rules may use points, overtime results, forfeits, or tiebreakers that differ from a simple win percentage.
  • A 100% target is impossible after any uncredited result; the calculator reports that case explicitly.
  • Each record input is limited to one million to prevent accidental oversized entries.
