How to use the drywall mud calculator
- Enter installed drywall area directly or calculate it from whole sheets and sheet dimensions.
- Select whether the manufacturer’s coverage represents the complete taping and finishing system or one full coat.
- For per-coat coverage, enter the number of full coats. The complete-system option uses one coverage pass.
- Add an allowance for waste, container residue and site variation.
- Enter package coverage, package volume and price from the product you will purchase.
Formula
Drywall area from sheets = number of sheets × sheet length × sheet width. Equivalent coverage area = drywall area × coverage passes × (1 + allowance ÷ 100). Packages = equivalent coverage area ÷ coverage per package, rounded up. Compound purchased = packages × package size. Cost = packages × price per package.
Worked example
For 1,000 ft² of installed drywall, complete-system coverage and 10% extra, the purchasing basis is 1,100 ft². If one package covers 500 ft², purchase 3 packages. With 4.5 US gal per package, that is 13.5 US gal of packaged compound.

Coverage limits
Joint compound usage changes with board layout, seam length, finish level, corner bead, fastener count, joint width, coat thickness, sanding and installer technique. Ready-mixed and setting-type compounds also have different package sizes and yields. Use the current coverage information for the exact product and application; do not treat the reset values as a manufacturer claim.
This tool estimates purchasing quantity. It does not determine drywall finish level, drying time, mix water, structural performance, fire rating or code compliance.
Frequently asked questions
Is drywall mud the same as joint compound?
“Drywall mud” is the common name for joint compound used in taping, finishing and skim coating. Products and intended uses vary.
Should I count sheet area before or after openings?
Use installed board area when known. If estimating from purchased sheets, the sheet method includes offcuts and openings represented by the full sheets.
Why can two projects with the same area need different quantities?
They can have different seam layouts, corners, finish levels, coat thicknesses and waste. That is why editable product coverage is the purchasing basis.
