How the reading-time estimate works
Total words = pages × average words per page when page mode is selected.
Reading minutes = total words ÷ reading speed in words per minute.
Plan days = break-adjusted minutes ÷ daily reading minutes, rounded up. The completion date counts the start date as day one.

Frequently asked questions
Does the pasted text leave my device?
No. This calculator counts the text locally in the browser and does not upload it.
Why show both reading time and time with breaks?
The first result is pure reading time. The second adds only the scheduled breaks that occur before the reading is finished.
How can I estimate a whole book?
Choose pages, enter the page count and a realistic average words per page. If you know the exact word count, use that instead.
Can this estimate speaking time?
You can enter a custom pace such as your measured spoken words per minute, but pauses, audience interaction and slide changes are not modeled.
How are chapters used?
They do not change total time. They provide an average time per chapter and a practical daily chapter target.

Mathematical Formulas for Reading Time Calculation
Accurately calculating reading time involves fundamental variables. Let’s define each and apply formulas stepwise for clarity.
Variables Definition
- W = Total number of words in the book, page, or chapter
- P = Number of pages (if working at a page-level)
- WpP = Words per page (average)
- Ch = Number of chapters (if available)
- WpCh = Words per chapter (page count × words per page)
- R = Reader’s speed in words per minute (wpm)
- T = Time required to read in minutes
Core Formulas
1. Total words estimation from pages:
W = P × WpP
2. Time to read based on total words:
T = ( W ) / R
3. Time estimate by chapters:
T = Σi=1Ch ( WpChi ) / R
where WpChi is the word count for chapter i
Explaining Variables in Context
- Words per page (WpP) generally ranges from 200 to 450 depending on font size, layout, and formatting.
- Reading speed (R) widely varies from 200 wpm (slow readers) to 650 wpm (experienced speed readers).
- Number of pages or chapters depends on the book’s structure and genre — technical manuals often have longer pages, while novels have fewer words per page due to formatting.
Practical Real-World Examples of Reading Time Calculation
Example 1: Calculating Reading Time for a 400-Page Novel
Consider a standard novel of 400 pages, averaging 350 words per page. The reader’s average speed is about 300 words per minute.
Step 1: Calculate total words:
W = 400 × 350 = 140,000 words
Step 2: Calculate time:
T = 140,000 / 300 ≈ 466.67 minutes
Step 3: Convert minutes to hours and minutes:
466.67 minutes = 7 hours and 46 minutes approximately
This means completing the novel at this speed takes nearly 8 hours of continuous reading.
Example 2: Time Estimation for a Technical Book with Variable Chapter Lengths
Suppose a technical book has 10 chapters with the following page counts:
- Chapter 1: 20 pages
- Chapter 2: 35 pages
- Chapter 3: 25 pages
- Chapter 4: 40 pages
- Chapter 5: 30 pages
- Chapter 6: 45 pages
- Chapter 7: 50 pages
- Chapter 8: 20 pages
- Chapter 9: 25 pages
- Chapter 10: 10 pages
Average words per page: 400
Reader’s speed: 350 wpm
Step 1: Words per chapter (WpCh) = pages × words per page
- Chapter 1: 20 × 400 = 8,000 words
- Chapter 2: 35 × 400 = 14,000 words
- Chapter 3: 25 × 400 = 10,000 words
- Chapter 4: 40 × 400 = 16,000 words
- Chapter 5: 30 × 400 = 12,000 words
- Chapter 6: 45 × 400 = 18,000 words
- Chapter 7: 50 × 400 = 20,000 words
- Chapter 8: 20 × 400 = 8,000 words
- Chapter 9: 25 × 400 = 10,000 words
- Chapter 10: 10 × 400 = 4,000 words
Step 2: Calculate reading time per chapter:
Ti = WpChi / R
- Chapter 1: 8,000 / 350 ≈ 22.86 minutes
- Chapter 2: 14,000 / 350 ≈ 40.00 minutes
- Chapter 3: 10,000 / 350 ≈ 28.57 minutes
- Chapter 4: 16,000 / 350 ≈ 45.71 minutes
- Chapter 5: 12,000 / 350 ≈ 34.29 minutes
- Chapter 6: 18,000 / 350 ≈ 51.43 minutes
- Chapter 7: 20,000 / 350 ≈ 57.14 minutes
- Chapter 8: 8,000 / 350 ≈ 22.86 minutes
- Chapter 9: 10,000 / 350 ≈ 28.57 minutes
- Chapter 10: 4,000 / 350 ≈ 11.43 minutes
Step 3: Aggregate reading time:
T = Sum of individual chapter times ≈ 342.86 minutes
Equivalent to approximately 5 hours and 43 minutes.
This detailed approach is essential for complex books where chapters vary significantly in length and difficulty.
Additional Considerations for Precision in Reading Time Calculation
It is crucial to understand other elements influencing accuracy:
- Skimming vs. Deep Reading: Skimming requires less time compared to critically intense technical reading which is slower.
- Text Complexity: Higher vocabulary difficulty or technical jargon slows down average reading speed substantially.
- Physical Media vs. E-Readers: Layout and scrolling can impact page reading time on digital devices.
- Reader Variability: Different readers inherently have variable reading speed affected by fatigue, interest, and purpose.
