Profitability Index Calculator: PI, NPV and Target

Profitability Index Calculator

Calculate the profitability index (PI), present value of future cash flows and project NPV from periodic cash flows, or derive PI directly from a known NPV.

Formatting only; no exchange-rate conversion.
Enter the magnitude of the time-zero outflow as a positive amount.
Discounted cash-flow inputs
Use the rate for one cash-flow interval.
This labels periods; it does not convert the entered rate.
Separate up to 60 values with commas, spaces, semicolons or new lines. Use a minus sign for future net outflows.
Optional target
Scenario range: −100 through 100.

Profitability index formula

Profitability index = present value of future net cash flows ÷ initial investment. With a known NPV, the equivalent formula is PI = 1 + NPV ÷ initial investment, because NPV equals the present value of future cash flows minus the initial investment. The same measure is sometimes called the profit investment ratio or value investment ratio.

For cash flow in period t, present value = cash flow ÷ (1 + discount rate)t. The calculator treats the initial investment as occurring at time zero and future entries as periods 1 through 60.

How to interpret the profitability index

  • PI greater than 1: positive NPV under the entered discount-rate and cash-flow assumptions.
  • PI equal to 1: zero NPV, before any omitted taxes, fees or risk adjustments.
  • PI below 1: negative NPV under the assumptions.
Ranking caution: PI is a relative value-per-unit measure. It can help when capital is constrained, but it can rank a small project above a larger project that creates more total NPV. Compare PI together with NPV, scale, risk and mutually exclusive alternatives.

Inputs, limits and assumptions

  • The initial investment must be greater than zero. Future cash flows and known NPV may be positive, zero or negative.
  • Amounts accept ordinary decimal notation, up to two decimal places and a magnitude no greater than 1,000,000,000,000. Scientific notation is rejected.
  • Enter 1 to 60 future cash flows at equal intervals. The discount rate must be greater than or equal to −90% and no greater than 1,000% per period.
  • The cash-flow frequency is a label only. Enter a discount rate that already matches the selected interval.
  • The target PI is optional and may range from −100 through 100, with up to four decimal places.
  • Use one currency and scale for all amounts. Currency selection changes formatting only.
  • This deterministic model does not forecast cash flows or determine an investment decision. Taxes, inflation, financing, timing within periods and omitted cash flows can change the result.

Frequently asked questions

Is profitability index the same as NPV?

No. PI is a ratio of present value to initial investment, while NPV is an absolute currency amount. They use the same discounted cash-flow inputs but answer different questions.

Can the profitability index be negative?

Yes, if the present value of future net cash flows is negative. Conventional projects normally expect positive future net inflows, but the calculator permits signed future flows.

Should I accept every project with PI above 1?

No. PI above 1 only indicates positive modeled NPV under the inputs. Budget limits, project scale, strategic fit, risk, dependencies and alternative uses of capital still matter.
