Dividend payout ratio formula

Dividend payout ratio (%) = cash dividends to common shareholders ÷ net income attributable to common shareholders × 100.

The equivalent per-share formula is dividends per share ÷ earnings per share × 100. The retention ratio is 100% − payout ratio. Totals and per-share inputs should produce the same answer when their periods, share basis and accounting definitions match.

Verified examples

  • US$300,000 of common dividends ÷ US$1,000,000 of common net income × 100 = 30%. The retention ratio is 70%.
  • US$1.50 DPS ÷ US$5.00 EPS × 100 = 30%.
  • US$1,250,000 of dividends ÷ US$1,000,000 of net income × 100 = 125%. Distributions exceed current-period earnings.

How to interpret the result

A lower payout ratio means more reported earnings were retained; a higher ratio means more were distributed. A result above 100% is mathematically possible, but it may reflect reserves, borrowing, a special dividend or temporarily weak earnings. There is no universal ideal ratio: compare consistent periods and consider cash flow, debt, earnings stability and industry norms.

Limits and assumptions

  • Each monetary or per-share input supports 0 to 1,000,000,000,000 with up to 6 decimal places. Net income or EPS must be positive. Scientific notation is not accepted.
  • The computed and target payout ratios are limited to 1,000,000%. A payout ratio above 100% is allowed; a negative or zero earnings denominator is not.
  • Use cash dividends and earnings attributable to the same common shareholders. Match basic or diluted per-share figures consistently.
  • The currency selector changes formatting only. This calculator does not assess dividend safety and excludes currency conversion, taxes, buybacks, preferred dividends and accounting adjustments.
