Return on Assets Calculator
Calculate return on assets (ROA) from net income and average total assets. Optionally add revenue for the DuPont components and set a target ROA.

Return on assets formula
ROA = net income ÷ average total assets × 100%. Average total assets are commonly estimated as (beginning assets + ending assets) ÷ 2. Use income and assets for the same entity and accounting period.
When revenue is supplied, the calculator also shows the DuPont identity: ROA = net profit margin × total asset turnover, where net margin = net income ÷ revenue and asset turnover = revenue ÷ average total assets. The identity helps separate profitability from asset use without changing ROA.

| $50,000 income; $450,000 beginning assets; $550,000 ending assets; $1,000,000 revenue | $500,000 | ROA 10.00%; margin 5.00%; asset turnover 2.00× |
| −$15,000 loss; $300,000 average assets; $600,000 revenue | $300,000 | ROA −5.00%; margin −2.50%; asset turnover 2.00× |

How to interpret ROA
ROA estimates the net income or loss produced per unit of average assets. A 10% ROA means the period’s net income equals 10 currency units for each 100 currency units of average assets. Higher is not automatically better across unrelated industries: asset intensity, leasing, depreciation, acquisitions, seasonality and accounting policies can change the ratio. Compare consistent periods, peers and definitions.
Input limits and assumptions
- Monetary inputs must share one currency, have no more than two decimal places and stay within ±1,000,000,000,000. Asset balances and revenue cannot be negative.
- Target ROA may range from −1,000% to 1,000% with up to two decimals. Required income assumes average assets remain unchanged.
- Zero average assets make ROA and asset turnover undefined. Zero revenue makes net margin undefined; it does not change ROA calculated directly from income and assets.
- Revenue is optional and is used only for the DuPont components. Do not substitute cash inflows for accounting revenue.
- The average of only beginning and ending balances can be distorted by large intra-period changes. Use a more representative average when available.
- This calculator does not normalize unusual gains or losses, adjust leased assets, choose an accounting standard or provide investment, tax or accounting advice.
Use reported net income and total assets prepared on a consistent accounting basis. ROA is a historical ratio, not a forecast or a guarantee of operating quality.
Frequently asked questions
Should ROA use ending assets or average assets?
Average assets are usually more consistent because income accumulates across a period while assets are measured at points in time. Beginning and ending balances are a common approximation.
Can return on assets be negative?
Yes. A net loss produces negative ROA when average assets are positive. The result describes the selected period; it does not identify the cause of the loss.
Is ROA the same as ROI or ROE?
No. ROA compares net income with total assets. ROI compares a return with a selected investment cost, while return on equity compares income with owners’ equity.
