Optional amount deducted after percentage withholding.

How to gross up a payment

A gross-up works backward from the amount a person should receive after deductions. If N is the desired net payment, r is the effective withholding rate as a decimal, and F is the fixed deductions amount, the required gross payment is:

Gross payment = (desired net payment + fixed deductions) ÷ (1 − withholding rate)

Percentage withholding equals the gross payment multiplied by the rate. Total deductions equal percentage withholding plus fixed deductions. In the reverse mode, estimated net pay is gross × (1 − rate) − fixed deductions.

What the withholding rate means

The rate is a scenario input, not a tax calculation. Use a reasonable combined effective percentage based on the payment and payroll rules that apply to you. Marginal income-tax rates, supplemental-wage rules, payroll taxes, state or local withholding, benefits and post-tax deductions can behave differently. If you need a payroll result, confirm the final amount in the applicable payroll system or with a qualified professional.

Important: this tool does not calculate federal, state, local or international taxes and does not determine whether a payment is taxable. A gross-up estimate can differ from actual payroll because withholding may use brackets, annualization, caps or deduction-specific rules.

Limits and input rules

  • Payments must be greater than zero and no more than 1,000,000,000 in the selected currency.
  • The effective withholding rate must be from 0% through 99.99%. A rate of 100% leaves no finite gross amount.
  • Fixed deductions must be from zero through 1,000,000,000 and use the same currency as the payment.
  • In gross-to-net mode, deductions cannot make the calculated net payment negative.
  • Currency selection changes display formatting only; all inputs must already use one currency.

Frequently asked questions

What is a gross-up?

A gross-up increases a payment so that the amount remaining after modeled deductions equals a chosen net amount. Employers may use it for bonuses, relocation payments or other taxable benefits, subject to applicable payroll rules.

Why is gross-up not just net divided by the withholding rate?

The retained share is 1 − rate. At a 25% rate, 75% remains, so a target before fixed deductions is divided by 0.75—not by 0.25.

Can I use this as a bonus tax calculator?

You can model a bonus with a rate you provide, but the calculator does not determine the correct tax or withholding method. Actual bonus withholding may not equal final tax liability.

Are fixed deductions taxed?

This model treats the percentage deduction as a share of gross pay and subtracts the fixed amount separately. Change the inputs if your payroll system uses a different order or deduction basis.

Does the calculator convert currencies?

No. USD, CAD, AUD, EUR, GBP and COP are display choices only.
