Credit Utilization Calculator

Credit Utilization Calculator

Enter the balances and credit limits that you expect card issuers to report. The calculator shows utilization for each card and across all cards, plus the payment or added limit needed for a target you choose.

Revolving credit accounts

Use the balance expected on the issuer’s reporting date, not necessarily today’s app balance. Leave unused rows completely blank.

How credit utilization is calculated

Credit utilization compares a reported revolving balance with its credit limit. The same calculation can be made for one account or for all entered accounts together:

Utilization (%) = reported balance ÷ credit limit × 100

Overall utilization uses total balances divided by total limits. It is not the simple average of the card percentages, because larger limits carry more weight.

Target calculations

  • Payment needed: total balances − target percentage × total limits, never below zero.
  • Additional limit needed: total balances ÷ target percentage − current total limits, never below zero. This is not finite when the selected target is 0% and a balance remains.
  • Room before target: target percentage × total limits − total balances, never below zero.

These scenarios assume no new charges, fees, interest, limit reductions or other account changes.

Checked example

Suppose three cards report balances and limits of $1,200/$5,000, $1,600/$3,000 and $700/$2,000. Total reported balances are $3,500 and total limits are $10,000.

Overall utilization = $3,500 ÷ $10,000 × 100 = 35%.

For a user-selected 30% target, balances would need to fall to $3,000. With no other changes, the estimated payment is $500. Alternatively, keeping the $3,500 balance would require about $11,666.67 in total limits, or $1,666.67 more. These are arithmetic scenarios, not recommendations or promises that a lender will grant a limit increase.

Which balances and limits should you enter?

  • Use the balance likely to be reported to credit bureaus. It may differ from the current balance or the payment due.
  • Use the current revolving credit limit shown by the issuer.
  • Enter cards and other revolving lines only when their balances and limits are reported in a comparable way.
  • Do not include installment balances such as mortgages or auto loans in this ratio.
  • If an account has a credit balance, enter 0 rather than a negative number; reporting treatment can vary.

Important limits

This calculator performs arithmetic only. It does not calculate or predict a credit score. Credit models may consider overall and individual-account utilization, timing, account type, available data and many other factors. Reporting dates may differ from due dates, and issuers can change limits. A selected target is only a personal planning input; no percentage guarantees approval, pricing or a score change.

Inputs are limited to six accounts, 0–100% for the target and 1 trillion monetary units per balance or limit. The currency selector changes display formatting only.
