How to estimate window replacement cost

  1. Group windows that share a style, size and quoted unit price.
  2. Enter the width and height of the rough opening or unit consistently; measurements provide area and trim quantities but do not change the entered product price.
  3. Separate the window price from installation labor so tax and labor assumptions remain visible.
  4. Add trim, disposal, flashing or opening repairs, access equipment, permits and delivery only when they are not already included in a quote.
  5. Apply sales tax to the window prices and a project contingency, then compare the itemized result with written local bids.

Checked example: eight 36 × 60 in double-hung windows at $650 plus $250 labor each, and two 60 × 48 in picture windows at $900 plus $350 labor each, total 10 windows and 160 ft² of opening area. With the sample trim and project inputs, 7% sales tax and 10% contingency, the budget is $17,058.80.

Formulas used

Group area = count × width × height, converted to square feet or square meters. Group perimeter = count × 2 × (width + height), converted to feet or meters. Window material = count × window price. Installation labor = count × labor price. Trim = total perimeter × trim rate. Disposal = total count × disposal rate. Sales tax = window material × tax percentage ÷ 100. Base including tax = window material + installation labor + trim + disposal + entered fixed costs + sales tax. Contingency = base × contingency percentage ÷ 100. Total budget = base + contingency.

Avoid double counting

If the installer quote already includes removal, disposal, trim, flashing, delivery or permit handling, set those separate fields to zero. Enter full-frame and insert/pocket installations as separate groups when their labor prices differ. For a bay or bow assembly sold as one unit, enter its assembly count rather than the number of glass sections.

Important limits

This calculator performs arithmetic on your measurements and prices; it does not infer regional prices. It does not determine code compliance, egress, tempered-glass requirements, structural modifications, lead or asbestos work, water damage, hidden framing repairs, energy incentives, financing, warranty terms or whether an opening accepts an insert replacement. Confirm measurements, taxes, permits and installation scope with qualified local professionals.
