CMU core-fill material estimator
Block Fill Calculator
Estimate concrete or masonry grout for hollow block cells from a known block count or wall dimensions. Use the fill volume printed by the block manufacturer for the exact unit.
Block fill formulas
The outside size of a CMU does not reveal its net hollow-cell volume. Web thickness, face-shell thickness, core shape and manufacturer differ, so this calculator deliberately asks for the product’s fill volume per block instead of inventing a universal preset.
Checked example
For 100 hollow blocks, 100% fill, 0.15 ft³ per block and 10% extra, net fill is 15 ft³ and order volume is 16.5 ft³, or 0.611 yd³. At 0.5 ft³ mixed yield per bag, purchase 33 bags. At 140 lb/ft³, the order volume weighs about 2,310 lb.
How to use the calculator
- Choose a known block count when the masonry takeoff is complete. Otherwise, estimate the count from net wall area and the installed nominal face module.
- Enter the percentage of blocks specified to be filled. Partial grouting follows the reinforcement and structural plan, not a generic rule.
- Find the exact unit’s fill volume in the block manufacturer’s technical data or obtain it from the supplier.
- Enter the packaged grout or concrete yield and an explicit extra allowance, then compare whole bags with the bulk order volume.
Limits and safety
This tool estimates material quantity only. It does not choose grout type, strength, slump, aggregate grading, lift height, cleanouts, reinforcement, bond beams, consolidation, inspection or wall capacity. Structural masonry and partially grouted walls must follow the project documents, product requirements and applicable local code. Confirm fill volume, mix, placement and ordering minimums with the manufacturer, supplier and qualified project professional.
Openings are subtracted only in wall-dimension mode. Bond-beam units, lintels, pilasters, cut blocks and units with different core geometry should be calculated as separate groups.
