How to estimate concrete for ICF walls

Measure the face area of each wall, subtract doors and windows, and enter the concrete fill volume published for the exact ICF form and core size. This manufacturer-based method accounts for the form geometry instead of treating every ICF wall as a solid rectangular slab.

Formulas

Gross wall area = length × height × run count. Net wall area = gross wall area − openings. Concrete before allowance = net wall area ÷ basis area × manufacturer fill volume. Concrete to order = concrete before allowance × (1 + extra percentage). Straight forms = net wall area ÷ face coverage per form, rounded up.

Checked example

A 100 ft × 8 ft wall has 800 ft² gross area. Subtracting 100 ft² of openings leaves 700 ft². At 50 ft³ of concrete per 100 ft², the wall needs 350 ft³ before allowance. Adding 10% gives 385 ft³, or 14.259 yd³. At 5.33 ft² per straight form, the area represents 132 straight-form equivalents.

Important limits

  • Use fill and form-coverage values from the selected manufacturer’s current technical data.
  • Straight-form count does not include corners, bucks, taper tops, lintel forms, bracing, webs, ties or cutting losses.
  • The calculator does not design reinforcing steel, lift height, mix, slump, pump setup or pour rate. Follow project documents, the ICF supplier and local requirements.
  • Openings must be smaller than the total gross wall area. Do not subtract openings if the supplier’s takeoff method already includes them.
