Rule of thumb: there is no exact biological conversion between cat years and human years. Breed, genetics, health, nutrition and living conditions affect aging. Use the result as an educational comparison, not a diagnosis or veterinary forecast.
How the cat-to-human estimate works
This calculator uses a common staged rule of thumb instead of multiplying every cat year by one fixed number:
- During the first cat year, the estimate rises from 0 to 15 human years.
- During the second cat year, it rises from 15 to 24 human years.
- After age 2, each additional cat year adds 4 human years.
For decimal cat age C, the model is 15 × C through year 1, 15 + 9 × (C − 1) from year 1 through 2, and 24 + 4 × (C − 2) after year 2. Months are interpolated inside the applicable segment.
Life stages follow the broad ranges in the 2021 AAHA/AAFP Feline Life Stage Guidelines: kitten, young adult, mature adult and senior. Stage labels help organize preventive care discussions; they do not predict an individual cat’s lifespan.

- The calculator supports cat ages from birth through 30 years.
- Birth-date mode uses elapsed calendar days divided by 365.2425 to estimate decimal years; the total day count remains exact for the entered dates.
- Reverse conversion is an algebraic inverse of the same rule of thumb, not a claim that a cat and person age identically.
- Young adult begins at age 1, mature adult at age 7 and senior at age 11 in the displayed stage model.
- Health concerns, preventive-care timing and lifespan questions belong with a veterinarian who knows the individual cat.

Questions
Is one cat year equal to seven human years?
No. Cats mature much faster during their first two years, so a fixed seven-to-one multiplier understates early development. The staged comparison is still only an estimate.
Do indoor and outdoor cats use different formulas?
This tool uses the same chronological conversion for every cat. Lifestyle and health may affect longevity, but changing the arithmetic would imply precision the model does not have.
Can I use months for a kitten?
Yes. Enter zero completed years and 1 through 11 additional months. The calculator interpolates the first-year estimate.
Does the result tell me how long my cat will live?
No. It does not estimate remaining lifespan, health status or veterinary risk.
