Boat loan calculator
Estimate the amount financed, monthly payment, total interest and payoff schedule for a new or used boat.
How the boat loan calculator works
The calculator first estimates the sales tax and amount financed. The default tax option applies the entered rate to the full boat price. Select the trade-in option only if your jurisdiction taxes the price after an eligible trade-in credit. Taxes, documentation charges and registration fees vary, so enter values from a dealer quote or local authority instead of treating the defaults as a quote.
For a fixed-rate installment loan, the scheduled monthly payment is:
Payment = P × r(1 + r)n ÷ ((1 + r)n − 1)
Here, P is the amount financed, r is the monthly interest rate and n is the number of monthly payments. At 0% APR, the payment is simply principal divided by the number of months. Extra payments are applied to principal in the simulation and may shorten the payoff period.
What is included in the amount financed?
The estimate uses the boat price, down payment, trade-in allowance, sales tax and financed fees. It does not automatically include optional insurance, marina costs, storage, fuel, maintenance, survey costs or lender-specific charges. Add any financed closing charges to the fees field. Keep recurring ownership costs separate so the loan payment is not mistaken for the full monthly cost of owning a boat.
Example
For a $65,000 boat with a $13,000 down payment, no trade-in, 6% sales tax and $1,200 of fees, the estimated amount financed is $57,100. At 7.5% APR for 15 years, the scheduled payment is approximately $529 per month. The exact result can differ by rounding, payment timing, tax rules and lender fees.
How to compare boat financing offers
- Compare APR, not only the advertised interest rate, because APR can reflect certain loan costs.
- Check whether the rate is fixed or variable and whether a prepayment penalty applies.
- Use the same price, down payment and term for every offer.
- Review the total interest as well as the monthly payment. A longer term can lower the payment while increasing total interest.
- Confirm how trade-ins and sales tax are treated where the boat will be registered.
Frequently asked questions
Does a trade-in reduce sales tax?
It depends on the jurisdiction and transaction. The calculator supports both full-price tax and tax after trade-in, but it does not determine which rule applies.
Can I calculate a used boat loan?
Yes. Enter the agreed used-boat price, actual APR, term, down payment, taxes and fees. Some lenders set different maximum terms or rates based on vessel age.
Does the calculator include a balloon payment?
No. The schedule assumes a fully amortizing fixed-rate loan with equal scheduled payments. A loan with a balloon, variable rate or interest-only period requires its own contract-specific calculation.
Are boat finance calculator and boat loan calculator different?
They usually describe the same planning task. This single calculator covers both terms to avoid duplicate tools.
